The Heavy Vehicle Pilot Licence aims to introduce and maintain industry benchmark standards and improve safety on our roads.

From 28 November 2016 all Heavy Vehicle Pilots are required to obtain a Heavy Vehicle Pilot Licence. The licence is renewable every three years.

During this transition period current accredited pilots will be required to:

  • hold a current Motor Drivers Licence;
  • pass an Assessment of Fitness to Drive for Commercial Drivers examination;
  • provide evidence of six piloted moves within the last three years; and
  • complete an application form and pay an administration fee of $205

New Heavy Vehicle Pilots

From 28 November 2016 individuals looking to become Heavy Vehicle Pilots will be required to:

  • pass an Assessment of Fitness to Drive for Commercial Drivers examination;

Are your details up to date with Main Roads WA?

Main Roads WA formally became responsible for the administration of WA Pilot Accreditation at the beginning of 2013, assuming responsibility from WA Police. Over this time, Main Roads WA has been building a new and up to date database of active pilots while also conducting a review of current accreditation arrangements and the Code of Conduct for Pilot Vehicles and Pilots. As this work continues, Main Roads WA will provide updates to the pilot industry on the project and other issues impacting pilots.
